China has imposed a new policy restricting the publication of academic research on the origin of the novel coronavirus / Covid-19.

The restrictions were revealed in a central government directive by the Ministry of Education's science and technology department and online notices from Fudan University and the China University of Geoscience in Wuhan

However, CNN reports that the notices have since been deleted from the internet. Any academic papers on the novel coronavirus will reportedly receive extra scrutiny before being published. The central government also has to approve any academic papers on the origin of the virus

According to CNN, clinical analysis of COVID-19 cases published in an international medical journal did not receive extra vetting in February 2019. The analysis was the result of the work of a Hong Kong medical expert and mainland researchers.

Since the novel coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan in December 2019, numerous stories have spread about its origins. Chinese researchers have been publishing their coronavirus studies in international medical journals for months, with results leading to questions over when exactly the government learned about the virus.

An anonymous Chinese researcher believes that “it is a coordinated effort from  CCP to paint it as if the outbreak did not originate in China”. Academic papers on the origin of the novel coronavirus will have to first be vetted by universities’ academic committees.

The papers must then be given to the Ministry of Education’s Science and Technology Department, which sends the papers to the State Council. The researchers must wait for the State Council’s task force to approve the papers and notify their universities. Only then can the researchers submit their coronavirus research to medical journals.

Other coronavirus-related papers will have to be approved by universities based on their “timing for publishing” and “academic value”. The directive was a result of a March 25 State Council COVID-19 task force and was reportedly meant to be an internal document.

According to Inquirer Lifestyle, one Chinese research paper from the South China University of Technology suggested that the virus came from a Wuhan bio labThe Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention lies only 280 meters away from the Wuhan market touted as the outbreak’s epicenter. The paper was eventually censored by authorities and prevented from being published online.
